Born and raised in the City of Detroit, Kenneth Harris has been a passionate pioneer in helping African-Americans and other minorities attain economic equality. On Tuesday, November 3, 2009, Harris was elected to the Detroit Charter Commission by more than 40, 149 votes in a highly contested citywide race featuring 54 candidates. Harris was sworn in on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, by the Detroit City Clerk. Since his election, he has been an integral part of the nine-member commission that will revise the entire governing structure of the City of Detroit. The Detroit City Chart, datinerg back to 1802, has only been revised three times in the history of the city. This historic public office will make a tremendous impact on the city for the next 30-50 years. Through his position, Commissioner Harris will work to help Detroit rebuild its economic future and governing policies.
Harris a former NCAA Basketball Academic All-American point-guard for Clark Atlanta University in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) has made tremendous strides and professional accomplishments at the age of 37. Born on December 31st New Years Eve, Harris was the first African-American Chief of Staff and Executive Assistant to the Mayor of Southfield and the first African-American Director of Greek Affairs at Wayne State University. Additionally, he was the first African-American Counseling Psychologist for St. John Community Health and also served as the first African-American Vice President of Business Development for the Michigan Minority Supplier Diversity Council, Inc. Harris is also the President and CEO of the Michigan Black Chamber of Commerce.
Kenneth Harris also serves on the U.S. Black Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Midwest Director for the US Black Chamber of Commerce, the First Independence Bank Community Development Corporation. He is an active life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, 33 Degree Scottish Rite Prince Hall Mason, Hartford Memorial Baptist Church member, Mayor Dave Bing Campaign Economic Task Force, and the Oakland University School of Business Board of Visitors, just to name a few.
Within the past few years, Harris received the U. S. Small Business (SBA) 2007 Minority Business Advocate of the Year award and was inducted into Crain’s Detroit Business Class of 2007 40 under 40 and Who’s Who in Black Detroit Most Influential. Harris was honored by the Michigan Women’s Marketplace & CEED as the 2008 Entrepreneur of the Year and also received the 2008 Excellence Award for Economic Empowerment by 100 Black Men of Greater Detroit, Inc. Recently Harris accepted the 2009 CBS-WWJ 950 Emerging Leader Under 40 Award for Black History Month, as well as the 2010 Alpha Kappa Alpha Exemplary Community Servant Award. Harris also received the 2010 Michigan Front Page 30 in their 30’s award. Ken was recently chosen for the DBusiness Magazine 30 in their 30’s Most Influential in September 2011.
Kenneth Harris graduated with a B.A. in Psychology and M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia and Educational Specialist Degree from Wayne State University. He also received a Doctorate of Humane Letters from Detroit’s Lewis College of Business in 2008 and received an Educational Specialist (EDS) Degree from Wayne State University in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. Ken Harris is a PhD candidate at the Michigan State University in African American and African Studies and the Eli Broad School of Business Program.

A Fine Arts Affair will be held on May 5, 2012 at The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Artwork and fashion will be on display throughout the night while guests can enjoy live music, indulge in desserts and cocktails, and participate in an amazing raffle and silent auction. The event begins at 6:30pm lasting until 10:00pm and is free to attend, with donations accepted to benefit the Rhonda Walker Foundation. This multi-media community event has been a huge success thus far and is guaranteed to exceed expectations this year!
